Our first Winter Market will begin at the Lincoln County Farmers Market at Denver on January 7, 2012 from 9am until noon. Same location and same wonderful local food and crafts from local hands and local lands.

The Annual Holiday Market is this Saturday as is the last day of the regular season! Kids can make a pumpkin turkey, and refreshments will be available at 9am. There will be wonderful produce, meat and locally made crafts for your holiday table and gift giving.

Denver:
Christen Ehlert will have jewelry, handmade stuffed animals and leather bracelets.
Davis & Son will have Pink Lady apples from Western Lincoln County.

Lincolnton:
The Drye Family will be singing/playing for us from 9 to 10 am.

Loyd Lewis will have turnips, greens, lettuce, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and pepper.

Serendipity Bake Shop will have delicious cakes and jellies.

Bill Makuch will have broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts

Renee Vernon will have herbs for your window box to keep your cooking fresh all winter long.

November is finally here and our offerings are changing with the season. We had rainbow carrots, beets and mushrooms this week in Lincolnton along with hay and firewood. Breads, meat, crafts along with every good vegetable including pumpkins, greens and lettuce are to be found in Denver. Three weeks until our final market day on November 19th.

Denver Market and Denver Days are Neighbors

This weekend the Denver Farmers Market will slide to the south side of Rock Springs School to the bus parking lot to make a spot for Denver Days. Don't let this temporary change top you from visiting this wonderful market which is usually 20 vendors strong with 2 organic vendors, many traditional farmers, bakers, and artists.

Lincolnton Market is in for a treat when Luke Heafner brings his pottery to market this Saturday.

Apple Festival - Saturday, Sept 17, 2011

The Lincolnton Farmers market will be located within the grounds of the Lincoln County Apple Festival tomorrow. Shop our local farmers in front of the library on West Main Street and our local apple orchards throughout the festival. You'll find apples, apple cider, jams and jelly, muscadines, cut flowers, honey, and seasonal vegetables and fruits. For more information on the Lincoln County Apple Festival, click here.

Homemade apple pies are for sale today, Friday, till 5pm at the Extension office in Lincolnton - 115 West Main. $8 pies with proceeds to benefit the Extension and Community Association's scholarships for local students.

Roasted Vegetables Anyone?

Roasted vegetables aren't just for winter anymore. I've been roasting okra all summer! But cool air does make me think of roasted squash and potatoes. Wonderful new items are arriving at the markets each week. Make sure you don't miss it.

While I like to think my girls go to the farmers market for the fresh fruits and veggies, I know they really want to see Ms Diane and her table of baked goods! We have amazing bakers at both markets who make things that we don't have the time, skills or patience to tackle. Keep them in mind when it's your turn to take breakfast to the office or you need a hostess gift.

New vendors keep a coming!

In the last week, I've talked to 4 new vendors wanting to be a part of the Lincoln County Farmers Markets. In Denver, be looking for Brian Rollins of Good Wood Pizza Oven coming back with his dried shiitake mushrooms. Betty Dawkins will also be joining us with beautiful totes and fabric holiday trees.

In Lincolnton, we'll be seeing a new goats milk soap vendor in the near future.

Keep your fingers crossed --- there may be cheese coming to Denver market soon!!

We've had our annual corn roast this summer, and today I'm freezing a bushel of corn cut off the cob. If you have the storage space and a double boiler, it's not hard to preserve a bit of summer for the cool months ahead. The University of Georgia Extension is known as the Center for Home Food Preservation; check it for researched information on food preservation!

Giles Martin Recognized for Contributions to Agriculture

On Saturday, June 4th at 9:00am, the shelter at the Lincoln County Farmers Market in Downtown Lincolnton will be named for Giles L. Martin, Sr. Please join us at the shelter to recognize Martin’s contributions to Lincoln County agriculture and his service to NC Cooperative Extension.

Mr. Martin has served as the volunteer market manager in Lincolnton for 5 years – opening and closing the market facility, working with vendors and assisting customers in using the EBT/debit/credit card machine. In addition, Martin is a Master Gardener and has served on the local and statewide NC Cooperative Extension Advisory Leadership Committee.

Refreshments and a cooking demonstration will follow.

Reports are there will be an abundance of local Lincolnton broccoli this Saturday. I served a head smaller than this one last night. Normally it would have been too small for my family once I trimmed off the stems. However, these stems were so young and tender, we ate the entire thing - no waste at all!

The egg vendors in Lincolnton and Denver had eggscellent sales last week despite the windy weather!

With the beautiful hues on these farm fresh eggs, you may not need to dye them. But did you know there are some wonderful natural dyes for Easter eggs that you can make at home from yellow onion skin, blueberries, coffee, beets, and spinach. State Budget Cuts for NC Cooperative Extension

All of you are aware that the state's budget outlook is not good. While Cooperative Extension has been anticipating a cut, there is now talk in Raleigh of a cut on the order of 30% for our agency. This is double the "worst case" scenario that had been discussed. Our director, Dr. Joe Zublena, has informed us that this could result in the loss of 300-400 positions across the state.

Such a cut would mean a reduction in staff and in programs. We don't know what would be eliminated at this point. Programs in agriculture, 4-H and youth, local foods (including our farmers markets), family and consumer education (foods, nutrition, financial management, senior citizen programs, etc.), master gardeners and even the Lincoln County Apple Festival all stand to be affected in some way.

Blueberry time is here ... planting that is! At $6.00 per plant, we are offering six different varieties in one gallon containers. Local Christmas trees are plentiful this year. Henry Helms' farm in Vale was featured on WBTV last Saturday. Henry and Trudy have won awards for their decorated trees. They also have marshmallows and wagon rides to involve the entire family. Herter Tree Farm has antique farm equipment to see and a zip line to ride. Cedar Lake Tree Farm has a huge hay bale mountain for the kids and a lovely trim/bow shop too. Apples for Everyone!

I'm convinced that this Sunday afternoon may be the ideal time to make more applesauce and can tomatoes. With a cooling rain keeping us inside, the girls will love to turn the crank on the apple peeler. Should be a messy, but memorable afternoon.

Amazing Local Food!

Lincolnton and Denver markets are for food and crafts that are grown locally - in Lincoln or a surrounding county. As we move into fall and our dry weather moves closer to drought status, you will begin to see a change in the vegetables available.

The pac choi and beans were available in Denver last week. How lovely in a stir fry! Leon Buff had edamame and African horned melon. Ask him how to use these unusual products - he always has ideas!

Summer Regrets . . .

It never fails as the summer comes to a close that I'm convinced I didn't eat enough tomato sandwiches. This year I was sad that I hadn't canned any green beans ---- but cast that thought away! So I missed exactly 2 market days for summer camp. I couldn't believe how produce had exploded in just a week! Both markets have corn, okra, cantaloupe and watermelon. We even saw edamame and field peas in Lincolnton this week.

Got Fruit Flies?

If you're suffering too, make a trap by placing a paper funnel (rolled from a sheet of notebook paper) into a jar which is then baited with a few ounces of cider vinegar. Place the jar wherever fruit flies are seen. This simple but effective trap will soon catch adult flies which can then be killed or released outdoors.

Swiss Chard - it's my new favorite!

Swiss chard has shown up several places this year: Reba's Ridge Farm, Loyd Lewis, Freedom Farm and now at Duschel Farm in Lincolnton. Patrick Duschel is a chef and farmer. Here's his way to prepare delicious chard. It keeps it's color and is beautiful on the table.

Sauteed Swiss Chard with Onions

1lb Swiss chard

1T olive oil

1T unsalted butter

1 medium onion - (halved lengthwise and thinly sliced)

1 garlic clove finely chopped

Cut stems and center ribs from chard, discarding tough portions. Cut stems and ribs into 2 inch pieces. Stack chard leaves and roll up lengthwise into cylinders. Cut crosswise to make 1 inch strips. Heat oil and butter in large heavy pot over medium heat till foam subsides. Cook onions and garlic with salt and pepper, covered, stirring occasionally till onions begin to soften - about 8 minutes. Add chard stems and ribs and cook covered, stirring occasionally till stems are just tender, about 10 minutes. Add chard leaves in batches, stirring until wilted before adding next batch. Cook covered stirring occasionally till tender - 4 to 6 minutes. Serves 3 to 4.

Two of my favorite fall dishes are waiting for me to prepare them! Every Thanksgiving, my grandmother would have turnip soup and grated sweet potato pudding. We'd work on the farm all morning and coming in for a wonderful lunch of soup with our turkey dinner coming later that evening. I wasn't till years later I was told that turnip soup was what folks ate when they had little else - but for me it was a delicacy I waited all year for. As soon as I get time - I'm gonna make some: chicken broth, turnip puree, tomato and a bit of onion. I'll tell you about the grated sweet potato later this month!

"It's so easy eating greens!"

That's my poor paraphrase of Kermit the Frog's signature line. Greens are back at the market - mustard, kale and my all time favorite - collards. With a little cool weather, cabbage and lettuce won't be far behind. This week, I wilted fresh kale with some onions and a little bit of olive oil. On the table, I topped them with a balsamic glaze and chopped bacon. I also served roasted okra which is a big hit with my husband. Sticking with really simple preparation makes it easier to cook and enjoy.

The Lincoln County Farmers Markets are looking great. Lambkin or Piel de Sapo (Christmas) melons arrived in Lincolnton during the week. They are a popular desert melon in Spain. It's a small melon that Charles Lingerfelt is trying out. Ask him for a taste! We were glad to have Diane Hawkins back on Tuesdays in Lincolnton. Nothing tastes as good as her homemade bread with a plate of warm veggies.

Love those ugly tomatoes!
A midweek customer asked a vendor about the tomatoes - are they ripe? What happened to them? He was talking about the delicate though not dainty Cherokee Purple heritage tomato. There's a reason you've never seen them in the store - they are too fragile to be shipped and have a short shelf life. But oohh the taste and texture are lovely with a dark purple to brownish red color.
After some encouragement, the customer said - "I'll get one and make my wife try it!" Trust me, she'll be glad she did.

We'll be testing Presto dial gauge pressure canners in Lincolnton this Saturday. Just bring your lid!

Lincolnton Market - Incredible Edible Diversity!

Ms Vu brought incredible wax beans, purple beans, squash flowers and Chinese zucchini to market on Tuesday. With lettuce from Loyd Lewis, carrots from Charles Lingerfelt and the first peaches of the year with the Averys - - - it was a wonderful day.

Loyd Lewis did suffer some hail damage at his farm on Tuesday night. Please support our farmers as they battle the elements to bring food to our market!

My local plate!

It was my first mainly local meal of the season with fresh veggies from the farmers market. Steamed cabbage, zucchini roasted, pickled beets, sliced tomato, and a salmon patty made with local eggs and spring onions. NO - there's no local salmon in these parts - but going local doesn't need to be an extreme sport. When we have meals like this, I remind my family who grew each item - often that encourages my kids to try something new. Having a face to go with each dish, remembering the hard work they put in to feed me . . . well it is a simple pleasure and a reminder of our connection as a community.

Both locations are still happening places with Autumn crops arriving. The Downtown Lincolnton market will not be under their shelter Saturday but inside the Apple Festival grounds at the intersection of Grove and West Main Streets along with the Got to Be NC Big Cart. As seen on tv, the Big Cart (complete with a car engine) is barely large enough to hold a sample of all the food grown and produced in North Carolina.

All of Diane's products are made from scratch in her home kitchen, inspected and certified by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
